Happy Birthday George

George was born March 4, 1949 in Premium, Ky. I am 20 months older than he is and his given name is Maurice. Mom said I looked at him when he was just a few days old and couldn't pronounce 'Maurice' so I began calling him 'George' and that is the name he goes by to this day.

I've often wondered where did I get the name George from?

Maybe our uncle B? I'm not sure, but everyone I know calls him George.

Requiem for the sn______

'Member that snake that Sister Kay gave fair warning to recently down in sunny Florida? Well, her darlin' husband Mike arrived in Orlando last week and wouldn't you know, said snake has slithered its last. See that hoe? That is one deadly weapon in the hands of a man determined to save his fair wife from anxiety and concern and downright wet-your-pants fear. I know that kind of fear and it's not good. Not at all.

Since I published the post about Sister Kay, my darlin' husband informed me that WE, as in US, have a snake in our back yard. A garter snake he calls it. I prefer to call it Dead. He said it won't hurt me ... yes, it does ... Sister Kay & I discussed this fact ... just knowing they are around causes pain. He has given me instructions to 'leave it alone' because it 'kills mosquitoes & other bugs we don't want around' .... I shall leave it alone if and only if, it leaves me alone. I'm not at all sure how I'd eliminate the thing, but I'd surely think of something ... but hey! we have a hoe!

At this writing, our fearless Sister Kay is in Florida ... and as we all NOW know, Florida has its fair share of reptiles. One such reptile just happened to be in Megan's back yard and Sister Kay just happened to almost step on it last week. In her haste to solve the problem of 'black snake & what to do about it' she quickly (and trust me, she can be quick!) found a double-edged hoe in the back yard shed. It took tremendous calm, personal fortitude and speed to retrieve said hoe and as the photo above attests, she claimed it as her own and fully intends to be the reason for said black snake's sudden and unexpected demise should he/she/it decide to infiltrate Megan's yard once again.

We wish her well and may the rest of her vacation with her daughter be reptile-free. Of course, once Mikeford arrives on Tuesday, she can just let him handle the reptile problem.

Family Geneology

Just to let you know I'm working on our family genealogy and if you have any information you'd like to contribute, please let me know either by email or by leaving a comment on this blog. My email is cmoore2659@wowway.com.

Today I traced some of my Grandfather Riddle's family line. On his gravestone, pictured above, it gives his name as Laurenza Riddle, born March 4, 1873, died Sept. 6, 1948. In the genealogy records I found online it gives his name as David Lorenzo Riddle Given Name: David Lorenzo

Surname: Riddle Birth: 1873 in Letcher County, KY Death: in Perry County, KY

Father: Isom Riddle b: 1819 Mother: Susannah Wilson b: 1852

Marriage 1 Martha Jane PRATT b: ABT 1879
Married: 1898

I mention the difference in his name because I didn't know his first name was David until Dad told me during one of my visits to him a couple of years before Dad died. We were talking about my son David and Dad said "Did you know my Dad's first name was David?" "No, I didn't" I replied, "but it's good to know", and it was so interesting that I had named my first son David with no clue I was naming him after a Grandfather I didn't remember.

Dad was the youngest child in his family and therefore, when his first child was born, me, I guess I had a special place in Grandpa Riddle's heart. I have been told that Grandpa Riddle adored me and on one occasion set me up in the middle of the kitchen table and allowed me to walk around while folks were eating dinner. I wish I could remember this man but I don't. He was a minister and rode horseback to preach. It's my hope that I'll get to not only meet him one day, but to live for eternity getting to know him and hear the stories he has to tell about his life and how he came to faith in Christ; how he met his wife Mattie and what sort of work he did to support 9 children in the hills of Eastern Kentucky.

Clyde also had a grandfather he never met. His Dad's father, John Moore, died at 42 years of age back in 1943. Interesting again is that he picked out the name of our son Shawn, which is Irish for John. In a way, these two men live on in our sons and their children. One man knew me and loved me as his granddaughter; the other didn't live long enough to know that his oldest son Vernis, would one day marry and have two sons and eventually two grandsons to carry on his name.

It was my intent when I started this blog to give information about family. I hope this post helps do that for all those who called Winford Riddle either 'Dad' or 'Papaw'. And hopefully all the great-grandchildren will be able to read this and learn more about where their parents and grandparents have come from.

Today's poem..

Sitting in the airport today in Memphis Tennessee...
Thanking God for barbeque pork and good ole sweet tea.

Waiting on a flight to get me back home....
But first thru Charlotte, North Carolina and once again, traveling alone.

Watching all these people walk around, who knows where they are all going.
Looking back at me just as well, not really knowing.

Cold outside here, but not as cold as it is back there.....
Think I will go outside, have another smoke, 2 hours more delay to bare.

Rental cars, hotels, and another meeting somewhere new....
Working my way thru it all, come walk a mile in my shoes.

TSA security, check in and Ticketing and the screen line checks to...
Hanging out at the airport in Memphis, I can think of something better to do.

Like being back at home, relaxed back in my chair,
Not thinking about traveling again, I just wouldn't care.

So if you're home reading this, enjoy it while you can and laugh...
It won't be long before I have to travel again, back on another aircraft.

Was I affected by the sweet tea or the barbeque pork that made me today
write for this blog.........
Or am I just delayed in another lovely airport......feeling like a worn down traveling dog.
