Today we remember the men and women who have fought for our country over the years. Many have given their lives and many have been forgotten. It is a dangerous thing for one generation to forget what another has done to secure the freedoms we possess. May we take time not just today, but often through the years, to remember our service men and women. May we take time to thank them for what they've done and what they're doing to protect us. It is largely due to their sacrifices and the grace of Almighty God that we can rest safely in our beds at night. It is they who keep foreign tanks and missiles from entering our cities and streets. Many in this world don't have that luxury. If you're enjoying freedom today, thank a Veteran and thank the Lord for His mercy to us.
Two men I want to especially honor today are my husband Clyde and my Dad Winford. Two men. Two wars. Let us not forget them.
Clyde got his draft notice just 10 days after we were married in 1967. He left for basic training on Dec. 7 that year. His basic training was at Fort Knox, KY and in 1968 he received his orders for Vietnam. His Mom and I nearly panicked because we were in a full-blown war at that time and it wasn't a popular one either. At the last minute (God's providence at work) his orders were changed and he was sent to the DMZ in Korea. While there, our first son David was born. I later learned that where he was in Korea wasn't a safe place either. He has shared some of what went on there, but it wasn't until this summer and our meeting with his friend Rick that I learned what had really happened in Korea and the danger these men were in. Rick was a Lt., and Clyde was his driver for awhile. There's more to come with that story.

Below are pictures of post cards that Dad (Winford Riddle) sent home to his Mom while he was in basic training in Camp Edwards, Mass. I've shown the front of the cards and then what he wrote on the reverse of each one.
