Grandpa Riddle

This is a picture of our Grandfather, Lorenza Riddle on the left
and his brother Granville Riddle on the right.
Notice that their arms are interlocked and they each hold a Bible.

Kyle Whitaker supplied the following information on Facebook:
"The Indian Bottom Association of old Regular Baptist Churches of Jesus
Christ convened with the Sandlick Church Letcher County September 3rd,
4th, and 5th, 1915.

After singing by the congregation and prayer by Eld. Willie Francis, the Introductory Sermon was preached by Eld. D. W. Maggard from 2nd. Cor., 4:5, We preach not' ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord etc.

1. The delegates then assembled at a very suitable place prepared in the orchard by Bro. W.G. Caudill for that purpose. After singing by the congregation and prayer by Eld. Lue Riddle, the Moderator called for the letters from the churches that compose the Indian Bottom Association which was read and received and delegates seated as shown in the table of statistics."

"I should have also added lou riddle or l c riddle is mentioned from 1915

thru 1950 in the minutes mainly as a preacher in the association at
Leatherwood church. He was asst moderator in at least one association
meeting. That's what I remember on offices held in the association
anyway. His brother Granville is mentioned regularly up til his death
during same period."

"Also Louise, You know where your grandfather was on those days in september of 1915 exactly!"

Kyle also sent me this:

L. C. RIDDLE With a sad and fearful feeling try to write the obituary of my dad L, C. Riddle. He was born March 4, 1873 and died September 6, 1949. He joined the Old Regular Baptist Church at Big Leatherwood some where around 40 years ago and soon after was ordained to the ministry. He was the father of nine children, four girls and five boys. One boy preceded. him in death, the others are still living and 52 grandchildren to mourn his loss. He was a very strong man till the past few years. He rode horse back over mountains through snow and heat to fill his calling and promises. He stood firm in the Doctrine and Order. I believe he stood on the old land mark as close as a man could. I am sure that everybody that knew him misses him very much. But I believe his suffering is over and that he is resting today where there is no more trouble or sorrow. I am trying by the help of God to live day by day so I can meet dad again.

Brothers and sisters in flesh, if you want to meet dad any more, make peace with the Lord while living, for there’s no repentance after death. Written by his oldest son,

RUBIN RIDDLE.

MARTHA JANE RIDDLE It is with a sad feeling I will try to write a short obituary of my mother Martha Jane Riddle, which went by the name Matt Riddle. She was born April 20, 1879, and died October 3, 1949. She professed a hope in the Lord Jesus Christ about 40 years ago and was baptized in the fellowship of Old Regular Baptist Church at Big Leatherwood. She was a Deacon of that church for many years. She was the mother of nine children, five boys and four girls. One boy had preceded her in death the other eight are still living. 52 grandchildren are left to mourn her loss. She was loved by them all and we miss her so. She was bed fast for five months before her death. She was in my home the last four months before she died and I tried with all my power to please her in every way I could. She was the humblest (person during her sickness) I ever saw. She was visited by friends and relatives. Day and night she wanted singing and preaching and her friends to pray with her every day. We miss her so but children if you want to see mother any more, make mother’s God your God is my prayer. Written by her oldest son,

RUBIN RIDDLE

Asking Jesus Into Our Hearts?

I have to admit that I once believed this teaching, but now I confess that it was and is wrong! May God give you understanding as you read this. Your comments are welcomed.  I read this at Reformed Thoughts.

Ask Jesus Into Your Heart. Huh?

The music weeps, the preacher pleads, “Give your heart to Jesus. You have a God shaped hole in your heart and only Jesus can fill it.” Dozens, hundreds or thousands of people who want to get their spiritual life on track make their way to the altar. They ask Jesus into their heart. Cut to three months later. Nobody has seen our new convert in church. The follow up committee calls him and encourages him to attend a Bible study, but to no avail. We label him a backslider and get ready for the next outreach event.

Our beloved child lies in her snuggly warm bed and says, “Yes, Daddy. I want to ask Jesus into my heart.” You lead her in “the prayer” and hope that it sticks. You spend the next ten years questioning if she really, really meant it. Puberty hits and the answer reveals itself. She backslides. We spend the next ten years praying that she will come to her senses.

Telling someone to ask Jesus into their hearts has a very typical result, backsliding. The Bible says that a person who is soundly saved puts his hand to the plow and does not look back because he is fit for service. In other words, a true convert cannot backslide. If a person backslides, he never slid forward in the first place. If any man is in Christ, he is a new creation. (2nd Corinthians 5) No backsliding there.

Brace yourself for this one: with very few if any exceptions, anyone who asked Jesus into their hearts to be saved…is not. If you asked Jesus into your heart because you were told that is what you have to do to become a Christian, you were misinformed. If you have ever told someone to ask Jesus into their heart, you have more than likely produced a false convert. Here is why:

10 Reasons Not To “Ask Jesus Into Your Heart”

1. It is not in the Bible.
There is not a single verse that even hints we should say a prayer inviting Jesus into our hearts. Some use Revelations 3:20 to tell us that Jesus is standing at the door of our hearts begging to come in, ”Behold, I stand at the door and knock.” There are two reasons that interpretation is wrong. The context tells us that the door Jesus is knocking on is the door of the church, not the human heart. Jesus is not knocking to enter someone’s heart but to have fellowship with His church. Even if the context didn’t tell us this, we would be forcing a meaning into the text. How do we know it is our heart he is knocking at? Why not our car door? How do we know he isn’t knocking on our foot? To suggest that he is knocking on the door of our heart is superimposing a meaning on the text that simply does not exist. The Bible does not instruct us to ask Jesus into our heart. This alone should resolve the issue, nevertheless, here are nine more reasons.

2. Asking Jesus into your heart is a saying that makes no sense.
What does it mean to ask Jesus into your heart? If I say the right incantation will He somehow enter my heart? Is it literal? Does He reside in the upper or lower ventricle? Is this a metaphysical experience? Is it figurative? If it is, what exactly does it mean? While I am certain that most adults cannot articulate its meaning, I am certain that no child can explain it. Pastor Dennis Rokser reminds us that little children think literally and can easily be confused (or frightened) at the prospect of asking Jesus into their heart.

3. In order to be saved, a man must repent. (Acts 2:38)
Asking Jesus into your heart leaves out the requirement of repentance.

4. In order to be saved, a man must trust in Jesus Christ. (Acts 16:31)
Asking Jesus into your heart leaves out the requirement of faith.

5. The person who wrongly believes they are saved will have a false sense of security.
Millions of people who sincerely, but wrongly, asked Jesus into their hearts think they are saved but struggle to feel secure. They live in doubt and fear because they do not have the Holy Spirit giving them assurance of salvation.

6. The person who asks Jesus into his heart will likely end up inoculated, bitter and backslidden.
Because he did not get saved by reciting a formulaic prayer, he will grow disillusioned with Jesus, the Bible, church and fellow believers. His latter end will be worse than the first.

7. It presents God as a beggar just hoping you will let Him into your busy life.
This presentation of God robs Him of His sovereignty.

8. The cause of Christ is ridiculed.
Visit an atheist web-site and read the pagans who scoff, “How dare those Christians tell us how to live when they get divorced more than we do? Who are they to say homosexuals shouldn’t adopt kids when tens of thousands of orphans don’t get adopted by Christians?” Born again believers adopt kids and don’t get divorced. People who ask Jesus into their hearts do. Jesus gets mocked when false converts give Him a bad name.

9. The cause of evangelism is hindered.
While it is certainly easier to get church members by telling them to ask Jesus into their hearts, try pleading with someone to make today the day of their salvation. Get ready for a painful response. “Why should I become a Christian when I have seen so called Christians act worse than a pagan?” People who ask Jesus into their hearts give pagans an excuse for not repenting.

10. Here is the scary one.
People who have asked Jesus into their hearts, but never repented and put their trust in Christ, will perish on the Day of Judgment. How tragic that millions of people think they are right with God when they are not. How many people who will cry out, “Lord, Lord” on judgment day will be “Christians” who asked Jesus into their hearts?

So, what must one do to be saved?

Repent and trust. (Hebrews 6:1)
The Bible makes it clear that all men must repent and place their trust in Jesus Christ. Every man does have a “God shaped hole in their heart”,but that hole is not contentment, fulfillment and peace. Every man’s heart problem is righteousness. Instead of preaching that Jesus fulfills, we must preach that God judges and Jesus satisfies God’s judgment. If a man will repent and place his trust in Him.
If you are reading this and you asked Jesus into your heart, but never repented and put your trust in Christ, chances are good you had a spiritual buzz for a while, but now you struggle to read your Bible, tithe, attend church and pray. Perhaps you were told you would have contentment, purpose and a better life if you just ask Jesus into your heart. I am sorry, that was a lie. Please take a moment to understand the true Gospel of Jesus Christ.

If you have been preaching that people should ask Jesus into their hearts, I beg you to stop immediately. You will give an account for all the souls you have led astray

Saturday Sunshine

It's a beautiful Saturday morning! Cold, but beautiful. I hope you're all enjoying this day.

We had a great time with Stephanie and her husband Don yesterday. It was so good getting to know new friends, and to find we have much in common. And when I think of how we met ... just goes to show me once again, how God orders our steps when we least expect it. I was a patient, Stephanie was one of my nurses and that led to a friendship that goes beyond hospital walls. I'm so thankful.

We also went to the Library yesterday afternoon and I picked up 4 books to read...I started my first one last nite and it's called The Walk by Richard Evans. Already I can tell it's going to be a good book and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading.

What are YOU doing today? Christmas shopping? Working? Resting? Whatever it is, may your day be blessed and may you know the peace that only God can give.

Blessings to you all!
Love,
Louise

Christmas!

Good Friday morning Family!

Isn't it good to be alive? Yep, I think so! Life, even with its problems, is so precious and I sincerely hope each person reading this, knows first-hand this truth.  I love each of you and sincerely hope and pray that this Christmas is a blessed one for you!

Clyde and I are having lunch today with a new friend and her husband. Stephanie was one of my nurses while I was in the hospital this last time. She is a sweet lady who also lives close to us and attends the same church as Darrel Manuel, Clyde's cousin. What a small world we live in. And what a blessing to know her.

While I was in the hospital, they were able to diagnose what is wrong with my feet. Finally! It's a condition called Erythromelalgia and is quite rare....what else would I have, right? They researched and consulted and came to the conclusion that plain old aspirin is the best course of therapy (and inexpensive too) and it has helped a great deal. Thank the Lord for good doctors!  It seems I will always have pain, but for the most part, it's manageable. Just knowing what this condition is, is a blessing.

Don't forget to pray for Tony B....he's having heart surgery this Monday, Dec.

That's about all for now, take care!

Love to all,
Louise

Christian Faith

"The Christian faith is about a relationship with Someone who loves you and who has given you the freedom to be His friend. The further we get from that freedom, the further we get from New Testament Christianity and the more our Christianity resembles every other religion, merely a system for keeping the baser instincts of human nature in check. In other words, Christianity becomes a system of rules and regulations. If we live by them, our Christianity becomes pure drudgery with a vague hope that God will reward us in heaven for the drudgery. If we don't live by them, we either lie about it or give up altogether."

Something to ponder....

"You know,"  Liesl said now, tucking a hand in my arm as we walked. "I have to tell you something I have been thinking about for a long time, ever since Uncle Abe died."

"Yes?"

"I notice that the English are always saying, 'I'm sorry for your loss, so sorry for your loss.' It is an appropriate expression, I suppose."

"I nodded, wondering where she was going with this.

"But for me," she continued, "what I realized is that at other times when things are going well and a person is finding herself to be quite successful and affluent, earning and achieving and expanding, what I would like to say is 'I am sorry for your gain.'

I couldn't help but laugh, asking what on earth she meant.

"Just that the ways of God's people are not the ways of this world. Success and money and achievement can be a terrible hindrance to one's spiritual life. At least at times of loss, we are reminded of our priorities, of our many blessings. In times of gain, we can so often lose our way. This is why the Amish stress simplicity in all things at all times, because nothing should ever be allowed to turn our eyes away from what is truly important, from the cross."
